The boys won the battle of the top two this weekend and in doing so secured promotion to Division 1.
A highly charged and extremely emotionally challenging game started brightly by both sides, with some aggressive but fair tackles coming in. The Blues then took a deserved lead 20 minutes in, with Bikash Limbu sprinting into the area to see his shot parried into the path of Luca Colucci, who finished off first time. The boys were soon 2-0 in front when their powerful star Bikash got through the Highworth high line, and beat the keeper smoothly.
The final goal of the game came when Bikash once again latched onto a pass from Stan Banks to knock it past the goalkeeper for the third. The boys kept a disciplined shape and defended their lead so professionally, led by Tom Holland, Reece Gerring and Ben Rowlands at the back, with Zac Brain sat in front of them. These 4 have been relatively unsung throughout the campaign, but make no mistake, without the quality of our backline and holding midfielder, all of Bikash’s and Luca’s goals would count for little.
It was scheduled that we would be promoted next week, having to win our final games. However, with Lydiard Millicent dropping points in their game, the win was enough. I’m so proud of the players, as their attitude has been fantastic from the first minute we started coaching the boys, and they deserve all the success they get. They have been a pleasure to work with this year and we’re now looking forward to finishing the season off strong against Ramsbury, before looking ahead to the challenges of Division 1 football.
